Heaven on Earth
Those of you that read my blip of 29th May will remember that we searched for Agia Fotini church, Avdou (Crete) but were thwarted by the severe thunder and lightning. Today we made it with our friends, Kel & Mandy, walking the last mile uphill in the beating sun to be confronted with a sight of Heaven on Earth. An amazing church dug in a cave with views that will rival anything.
The blipfoto shows the view looking out from the cave entrance towards The Aposelemi Dam (an old village deserted to make the reservoir) with views beyond to the coast. The blip extra show an aerial view of us at the cave entrance and one of inside the church which is covered in artifacts. Luckily I took my torch and used the light for internal photo's. Birds flew around the cave entrance, with church bell and greek flag, as we sat and looked out at the stupendous views, in awe.
After walking back down to the car a good mile away, we enjoyed resfreshments in a real greek taverna in Avdou village before getting back for a siesta.
It's our last night in Koutouloufari before we move to the West Coast of Crete, so we enjoyed a farewell meal in the lovely mountain village of Mochos before going to our local Irish bar to watch the European Football final of Juventus v Madrid (1-4).
A visit to an amazing church that we'll not forget in a hurry. One that is not well known to Cretan people from outside the area as it's difficult to locate.
(The main blip photo was taken wide a 15mm Leica mount Voigtlander mk3 manual focus lens with Sony adapter for those wondering why there is no lens information)
