endangered...

...and the Western Swamp Tortoise (Pseudemydura umbrina) is in fact critically endangered and mainly restricted to the Swan Coastal Plain in Western Australia.
Until 1953 they were believed to be extinct until a schoolboy discovered one in the Upper Swan valley. Now a population in the wild is believed to be around 100 with captive breeding plans at zoos in Perth and Adelaide and more tortoises are released into the wild every year.

Our local shopping mall (not at all endangered) has been well and truly 'murieled' by 'Melski' with The Western Swamp Tortoise and the Red Tailed Black Cockatoo (extra) which may be vulnerable but thriving in our street...lucky us.
