STOP

I believe this to be an old railway signal indicating us to STOP.
How appropriate then that this should be positioned just outside the pub where the old Huntington station used to be.

The original line from York to Beverly was in two parts. The first part with stations at Stamford Bridge, Pocklington, and Market Weighton which opened up on 3rd October 1847.
Then intermediate stations were built at Huntington, Stockton on the Forest, Gate Helmsley, Fangfoss, Burnby and Shiptonthorpe.

The completion of the line to Beverley didn't happen until 17 years later due to financial difficulties that George Hudson was having. But on 1st May 1865 the first train ran from Hull to York.

With great sadness, the line ceased to operate by order of Barbara Castle the Transport secretary on the recommendation by Richard Beeching.

The last train travelled from Hull to York at 0942 hrs on the 27th November 1965
