A New Day

Forest Walk? Tick!

We were determined to do the local forest walk, as recommended by the cottage owner, but it rained on and off again all day, so we headed out in the car for a drive round the minor roads. When the sun did shine, the views were fantastic.

We did a circular route which took in Wigtown, where we learned all about the Martyrs of 1685 and had lunch in one of the many bookshops there (it's a Scottish version of Hay-on-Wye).

We also stopped at Newton Stewart and Stranraer and various smaller places in between. I even managed to get rather a nice shot of Ailsa Craig - the first time we've seen it without the mist.

On the way back to the cottage, the sun came out again and we decided to tackle the forest walk after all. It was quite hard work because the ground was so wet and nobody had mentioned that it was mostly uphill. The goal was to reach a pretty loch, which we did and then turned back because we realised the light was fading fast.

The photo is of the sun setting at about 7.30 pm just as we reached the end of the walk. If we'd left it any later it would have been really dark under the trees and we'd have got wet again, as the rain started up just as we got indoors!

A very full day and we should sleep well tonight!
