Crazy About Birds

Carolina Wren

There's nothing particularly silly about what this wren is up to - except that, as our Carolina wrens tend to do - the nest is being built in one of the plants hanging on our porch. Right in front of the door we go in and out of all day long, I might add. It's not the first time this has happened, and if I'm lucky there will be some photo ops before - if they're lucky - the young wrens fledge. Except that it appears that the opening in the nest they threw up today seems to be facing away from the window in the door where I stand with my camera. The wrens are nest building fools, I have to say - they went from nothing to a lovely mossy round domed house in one day. Both of them work on it, from what I can tell. My birding guru friend says that birds like wrens - and phoebes - nest right up on our porches because they know our very presence and comings and goings keep predators away! So I guess they're okay with us, as we are with them. We'll see what happens!
