Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

Another day, another fungus.

These tiny (less than 10 mm in diameter) beauties are the fruiting bodies of collared parachutes Marsamius rotula. Why they are called parachutes should be obvious!

They are often present in large groups, growing on dead twigs and roots, and can be found from summer to winter.

Thanks to Ceridwen and to Geoffrey Kibby I now have an identification for the mystery "mould" growing on the club fungus in yesterday's blip . It is most probably Calcarisporium arbuscula, a common fungus that feeds on a wide variety of other fungi.
