A sign.....

.....that all was not as it seemed. A terraced hillside with sheep grazing looked a little out of place with the environment until we turned a corner and all was revealed - the Lower Nihotupu Reservoir.

One of five reservoirs in the Waitakere Ranges supplying Auckland with water, built between 1945 and 1948, covering an area of 52.9 hectares and has a capacity of 4.6 million cubic metres.

The dam is one of the first applied examples of soil mechanics science in New Zealand, and was soon followed by the creating of engineering geology as a major subject at the School of Engineering, Auckland.

Enjoying exploring the Waitakere Ranges, now covering Miriwai, Bethells Beach, Piha and now the Nihotupu Reservoir, wonder what tomorrow will bring?

A backblip as time has got away on me, a couple of extras if your interested.

Enjoy the weekend everyone :)
