A time for everything

Benetka Road covered bridge

Sunday
Today we headed out of the city , about an hours drive to the east, to Ashtabula County, known for its covered bridges.
The county has a total of 19 covered bridges, some of them  rustic bridges dating back to the 1850's, but a number of them having been newly constructed since 1980. However, all are reminiscent of a time and style of a by-gone era. At one time, Ashtabula County had 62 of these wooden-structured bridges, but unfortunately many have long since been replaced by modern cement or steel bridges. There is a tour laid out with signs to follow, though I felt the signs could have been a bit bigger! We got around most of them, stopping each time to walk across them, taking photographs of the exterior and interior. It was a beautiful day, so we picked up a Subway sandwich for lunch, and set up our camping chairs on a nice grassy area near one of the bridges, which was on a quiet country lane, with a herd of goats in a field just the other side of the bridge.
The bridge I have chosen for my blip is the Benetka Road bridge, spanning the Ashtabula River. It is a 138-foot Town lattice design, and was built about 1900. It was renovated in 1985, at which time a laminated arch was added to the interior length of the bridge.
Late afternoon we returned to Cleveland to our new hotel for the next two nights, an older independent hotel across from the Botanical Gardens. They weren't able to take us last night as they were full - I think they had a wedding party. Later in the evening we walked into nearby Little Italy, where we enjoyed a wonderful meal - excellent food and good service.
