Air Ambulance about to land close to The Heavens

Helena called to me from downstairs a short while ago. She told me that there had been an accident on the path to The Heavens, the area just behind our back garden. It seems that a tree fell on to a young girl walking down the path and has trapped her.

Helena was with two friends of the girl who had come back up the hill to wait for an ambulance to guide them to the scene. Then I heard the sound of a helicopter approaching and within a few seconds it was circling around the hill and then circled round again above our back garden as I grabbed a couple of shots.

It was one of the Great Western Air Ambulance charity's helicopters and it landed about hundred yards further up our hill from us on Daisybank, the local children's play ground. Helena has just told me that they need to get more equipment to free the girl, who is conscious. But it is very worrying. We don't want to go down the path to the scene, which is only about seventy yards away, in case we get in the way.

Now (twenty minutes later) the helicopter has taken off from Daisybank and flown about three hundred yards across the valley to the Wayhouse area, which is closer to the scene of the accident. It will be easier to carry the stretcher across the Lime Brook stream and up the less steep slope to Wayhouse, a site of an abandoned farmstead. Then the girl will be flown to a Bristol hospital.

Helena and I went to the end of our garden, which is on a wooded slope opposite to the Wayhouse area, and from here we watched it landing. It was a bit hard to find a view through the leaves of the huge sycamore tree marking our boundary with the farmland and very steep slope behind us. I've blipped a view of it from there as it gingerly approached a landing place on the sloping ground. below the ancient 'Way'.

Update at 5-15pm, 2 hours after first landing:
The helicopter has flown speedily away and we are hoping that she will recover well. Fingers etc crossed.

Woodpeckers was more closely involved and she tells the sequence of events here on her blip.
