Heading up!

This is my entry for the Community Blip Challenge - Cultural Blip Point of interest or in other words 'What do you show guests from out of town'.

Well if any of you follow our walks you will know, there are lots of super things to,show people in our area and I would definitely take them on a walk either to the waterfall at Goit Stock or onto the heather clad moors. Nearby Saltaire and Haworth are musts too but if we ever tell anyone we live near Bingley it is the 5 Rise Locks they seem to have heard of.

We have been lots of times of course and have walked many miles on the Leeds Liverpool Canal on which they are situated but you never get tired of them especially if, as today, they are busy with barges and boats going up and down. We spent a very happy hour doing just that this morning as well as having a coffee at the 5 Rise Cafe at the top.

Built well over 200 years ago they are still in full use. I have blipped their restoration in 2012 when they were open to walk inside https://www.blipfoto.com/entry/1702686
and the nearby 3 Rise locks when they had new gates in 2015/16 https://www.blipfoto.com/entry/2153885462077374793

I think anyone from out side the country or not familiar with the workings of the locks would be fascinated. They are not the longest locks in the country but climb the steepest over a short stretch. The boats here are just entering to climb them. When we arrived there were two going down and they are very closely packed in. These two have just come up the nearby 3 Rise locks and the ones we saw going down were waiting there when we passed to take their turn going down again as two more came up. The lock keepers were working at full stretch.

Saturday in August is probably a busy time for traffic but you can see them in use all year round.

I haven't done any extras but you can see more in my Flickr  album: https://www.flickr.com/photos/16251802@N05/albums/72157687211845125
