Eye Benches

Sculptures by Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) What a great age. Functional benches resembling giant observant eyes which seem to follow you around. Carved by Italian stonemasons to her design, in black Zimbabwean marble. The perspective of surrealism is recalled by the displacement of the enigmatic eye. Visitors discover that these objects provide comfortable, outdoor seating. This is on loan to Jesus college for their 'Sculpture In The Close' exhibition and is situated in Library Court. There is another set, slightly different in the Seattle Art Museum and another on loan in Asia. I tried the seat and indeed it was comfortable. I really like this work, it's beautifully carved, smooth to feel and not thrown together like yesterday's old chairs !
