Onions are round!

We've pulled the first of the onions today and they are huge, the biggest we've ever grown... about the size of large oranges.

It could be because we've been able to give them more water because the irrigation water in this area was turned on for the first time when the plants were small, or it could be because of all the care and attention that we've given to them. But we think it's more likely to be because we were actually given the plants that we asked for, i.e. onions instead of shallots. When we bought this particular batch of plants from the nursery we were surprised at how much larger the baby onion plants were compared to previous purchases, and then it occured to us why our previous 'onions' were more oval than round when harvested...

p.s. We planted about 400 more onion plug plants yesterday, and they do look the right shape and size!
