Up to the Top

Day 4 of our Mini adventure. We got up early and took the cable car up the Chamrousse. It was a beautiful view at the top if a little breezy and chilly. After a warming hot chocolate, we headed back down.

There were some epic roads to be driven today from the Chamrousse round past Huez towards Briancon. We were a little suspicious when we found every sign on the route which said Briancon had been covered over. It turned out that a tunnel on the way was closed for repair. With a little research, we found you didn’t need to double back (as all the signs suggested) – instead an emergency road had been built the other side of the lake from the tunnel. It was a little hair-raising in places but an amazing feat of engineering to build so quickly.

We stopped for lunch in La Grave and looked up to see a very exciting looking cable car right up to the glaciers of La Meije.  On impulse, we decided to head up there. Even colder and windier up here but even more incredible views.

Finally we headed to our overnight stop at Alpe d’Huez. The road up here is a stage in the Tour de France – we felt tired just thinking about it.

So many photos to pick from but here is a view from the La Meije.
