September hillside

The hillsides change colour in September, with great patches of purple showing where the heather is growing. Even on the upper slopes of Benmore Gardens, where the planting echoes the forests of Chile and Bhutan, there are great clumps of heather among the moss and reeds of the hillside. Here their colours form a backdrop for a bunch of rowan berries which are at their very reddest just now.

All this pointing to autumn, while for the second day in a row the sun shone and the day became warm after weeks of grey coolness. I'm not going to dismiss summer just yet ...
