Eid

Backblip

My flight home was at 3am on Saturday morning and we were invited to a colleague's house for dinner until it was time to go to the airport.
On the way there we passed a lot of preparations for Eid going on which starts tomorrow. The most startling of these for me were the hundreds(if not thousands) of goats that were being bought and sold on one particular stretch of road. I was amazed at just how many there were, and our driver told us that nearly all of them had already been sold and taken away earlier in the week.
Shweta, our colleague, told us that almost all of her neighbours were Muslim and that there have been goats tied up outside most houses for the last few days.
Tomorrow, Saturday, all of these goats will be slaughtered as a sacrifice

Some information from Google:
Eid, which is also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, honors the willingness of the Muslim prophet, Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God's command.  The story goes — just as Ibrahim was about to sacrifice his son, Allah (God) replaced him with an animal and spared his life.

An important part of the festival is the animal sacrifice that is offered, with people purchasing live animals including sheep, goats and camels in the week leading up to the holiday. The animals should also have all their body parts intact and cannot be ill, blind, visibly lame or emaciated.
At the designated time on a particular day, the animal is turned to face Mecca and a blade is drawn across its neck with the words: "Bismillah”(in the name of God). The act of sacrifice is inspired by the story of Ibrahim.
The ritual dictates that the meat of the sacrificed animal must be divided into three portions, one to be distributed among the poor, one for relatives and one for self-consumption.

The thought of all those animals being slaughtered didn't sit too well with me, but Shweta is not Muslim so we were not subjected to having to meet her sacrifice. My blip for today is a rather poor shot of the two goats that were at her neighbour's house.
