'Regret'

For today's blip I'm back on the sculpture trail, but this time my subject has the added twist of being a water feature.

'Regret', by local sculptor/author Sam Mahon, sits in a pond in the Archery Lawn on the Eastern side of the Botanic Gardens. This modern bronze sculpture-come-fountain adds a twist to the otherwise coventional garden layout on this side of Hagley Park.

What makes it so neat is the multi-faceted nature of its design. The fountain is operated by a lever at the side of the pond, adding a very interactive and fun element to the whole design. The blindfolded figure shown is outstretched as if feeling its way towards the edge of the pond. Above it sits a fountain, which powers a jet of water towards a rotating collection of masks. This entire structure is topped with a bronze crane. To say it'sabstract is probably a fair description!

Rather than trying to capture the whole, I've focused on the figure, but from the less photographed position behind her. I loved the reflection in the pond in the rather flat afternoon light.

The great thing about this subject is that it offers so many photographic opportunities for future blips. You have been warned...
