Candle Production

Years ago Jan and I made candles for fun in our kitchen, using dipping rather than moulds. It was fun to do, but messy and took a lot of time. Each time you dip the candle into the wax bath it gains a thin layer of wax, but you need to let it set properly before you dip again, so there's quite a lot of waiting around.
That little piece of personal history explains why I was fascinated by this much more professional set up. Each bunch of candles is the right size to be lowered into the boiler which is filled with melted wax.  As they come out they are rotated away... (That big pole in the centre of the picture is the spindle.) ...and a new bunch comes around to be dipped. By the time the first lot have gone all the way around the circle the new layer of wax has cooled and hardened and they can be dipped once more.
The process still looks a little messy, judging by the outside of the boiler!
You can see the process in this lovely Irish film from the 1980's.
