Photographers' Paradise

Back blip (September 2)

One of the reasons Phil and I wanted to go to this year's North American Festival of Wales was the city in which it was held -- Rochester, New York, home to the George Eastman Museum.

That's the George Eastman of Eastman Kodak, "the pioneer of popular photography and motion picture film," as the website notes. The museum was founded in 1947 and "is the world's oldest photography museum and one of the oldest film archives."

This link gives you a brief overview of all there is to see at the Eastman Museum. If you happen to be in Rochester, New York, up through October 22, I strongly encourage you to go to the museum and take in the Eugene Richards: The Run-on of Time exhibit, which had some of the most powerful documentary photography I've ever seen, shot mainly with 35mm and 24mm lenses. You can enjoy 12 of his photos in this New York Times interview with Richards -- no travel required!

After reveling in the displays and exhibitions in the museum, I explored the beautifully-preserved historic mansion; check out Phil's blip and extra photo to get a sense of what it's like. This corner of a reading room on the main floor resonated with me, as no matter what "devices" are invented, I will always love books more!
