The boys are back in town

It is the Saturday nearest to 14th September when, in 1943, Greek submarine Katsonis was sunk between Skiathos and Glossa. Each year on this Saturday the Greek navy arrive in this cigar-tube and hold a remembrance service at the church of the Blessed Virgin Mary-as-a-teenager. Following the short church service there is a laying-of-the-wreaths ceremony beneath the statue of Nikos Kapadoukas, a local lad who was killed in Cyprus in 1964. I am not at all sure what he did to deserve such praise but it seems to be clinging to his memory. On Sunday the navy will have a larger service in Skiathos which will be more about the submarine and less about our Nikos.
