Guisborough

Rain and mist this morning, so a slow start for us which gave me a little time to work on the watercolour sketches I've been experimenting with.  We decided we'd go to Guisborough for our excursion today and although it was still damp and slightly drizzling the day has been warm and not unpleasant. Lunch was food rather than pleasure, though the young woman serving was delightful and then we tried to access the abbey, which of course being run by English Heritage was closed.  (Well it is Monday!). So we tried the churchyard next door and had some fun looking for Memento Mori stones.  We found a few depicting little angels and a couple of skulls and bones, but we also found one that is nothing like anything we've seen before which depicts a skull over the top of bat wings. (In the extras).  Also I found a rather decent specimen of Fly Agaric fungi that had not been eaten by slugs - the usual fate of almost all fungi near to where I live.  I think we need to return when we visit again in November on a brighter day and when the leaves have fallen as some of the graveyard was exceedingly dark
