The ungainly shape of the catamaran AliCat rolls it’s way past the restored but redundant Dunoon pier to the shelter of the breakwater where it will dock at the slip. But before the passengers can escape they will have to endure the docking process, which involves the laborious reversing into the boat’s own wake, with the associated pitching added to the rolling and the fumes of the ship’s diesel engine exhaust into which it has to turn.

No wonder my visiting family looked a tad green ...
