Life in Newburgh on Ythan

By Talpa

Memories of the holocaust.

This afternoon we visited the magnificent Parliament Building in Budapest. On our way there we passed the powerful memorial to the Jews who were killed by the fascist Hungarian Arrow Cross militia in the Second World War. The victims were marched to the banks of the Danube, ordered to take off their shoes, and were then shot at the edge of the water so that their bodies fell into the river and to be carried away. The memorial consists of cast iron shoes representing those left behind on the bank.
