Repairs

On the phone this evening to an elderly friend who lives on her own, she told us that she was worried because her lights were flickering.  Fearing that she might have a problem with her electrical wiring (which may never have been modernised since the house was built) we rushed over.

It soon became clear that hers was not the only house in the road with flickering lights, and soon after we arrived the power was cut completely.  A quick search on line revealed that the power network people were aware of a faulty underground cable.  They cut the power for safety while they investigated the fault.

As I returned home to fetch some more torches and a flask of tea, I passed the workmen digging a hole in the pavement.  A good job it was dry and relatively mild tonight (it would have been a lot worse a week or two ago in the snow and ice.)

A couple of hours after the fault was first reported, they had diverted the power to another cable, and the electricity supply was restored.
