Maritime City

Thought I would take the opportunity to walk the QE2 Mile today. I’ve done parts of it many times before over the years although in my time it was never known as such.
Yet it was an inspirational move to immortalise arguably the most famous cruise ship of all time in this way.
In essence, the QE2 mile is two city streets - Above Bar street and High Street which run slap bang through the city centre and principal thoroughfare of the city and includes the iconic ancient Bargate monument, once the main entrance to a walled city. It ends on the waterfront at the city’s Town Quay.
Southampton is long famed for its maritime ancestry, yet the QE2, officially Queen Elizabeth 11, stands out in modern times as the one ship to win the hearts of a seafaring community more than any other and in Southampton is still remembered with much affection. She sailed from the city for almost 40 years as a cruise liner until her departure for a final resting place in Dubai nearly 20 year’s ago
