Between fen and mountains

As good as it gets

Carriage clocks do not come more complicated than this one. Not only does it strike and repeat the previous strike with the button on the top but it also has three modes, silence, petite sonnerie and grande sonnerie. The petite sonnerie sounds the quarters on two gongs, two strikes at quarter past, four at half past and six at quarter to and then it strikes the hours on a single gong. the grande sonnerie strikes the quarters in the same way but also adds single strikes for the previous hour so the exact time can be heard at any time of the day or night. Needless to say the mechanical complexity to make this happen is remarkable.
