Green Snowdrop

Snowdrop season is definitely upon us, and who can resist their simple perfection? After a morning wrestling with a giant spreadsheet I relaxed by spending some time photographing the snowdrops and crocuses in the garden. The snowdrops are flowering bang on time, but the crocuses are a week to ten days earlier than normal - I've never photographed open blooms in January before (see extra).

I then went to our local churchyard, where Green Snowdrops are naturalised. They have much broader, glossier green leaves then the common Snowdrop, and today I noticed that the centre of the flower has an almost yellowish-tint. Interestingly all Snowdrops  contain an alkaloid, galanthamine, that has been approved for use in the management of Alzheimer’s disease in a number of countries.
