city

u2 always say good things

a very long time ago indeed, aristotle said "man is a political animal" - it's been misinterpreted a lot to mean that people are interested in politics (which we know to be far from true most of the time), but what it actually means is people belong in communities with laws and justice. ie, they belong in cities: polis was the greek term for city-state. from which we do indeed get politics and police ('the polis' if you're north of the border), but that's by the by.

so are we designed to live in cities? i crave the anonymity yet loathe knowing so few people; i love the convenience for shopping yet loathe the noise; i need to live in a city to do the job that i do but like nothing better than a weekend at my parents' place in the countryside to unwind.

maybe that's why my cityscapes tend to be devoid of people... this is glasgow's buchanan street, heaving with shoppers at 4pm yet i still managed to get a picture without a single person in it!
