Times past

A visit to the Weald and Downland Museum today (previously called the Singleton Museum I believe), a place which has rescued vernacular buildings from demolition and re-erected them at this lovely site. I've been meaning to go there for years; takes a holiday to do it! There are so many interesting insights into ordinary life, from clothing to tools, from cooking to sleeping, from gardening to crops, from schoolhouse to church bells. The real revolution seems to be the introduction of brick fireplaces when people were no longer lightly smoked, otherwise your average Anglo-saxon house was very much like your average hall house. We didn't mean to stay quite so long ... I've put in extras, but dont know if I can do justice to an amazing place - with a nice cafe too, so what's not to like?!!
Sadly, our other goal for today just couldn't be slotted in (a seaside wander) but I did spot some sea in the distance. That'll have to do for now.
Poppydog is enjoying biscuits at a dog-friendly pub so she's managing fine. And she may offer a sniff critique of her wanders around the museum site but I'm not sure if you'd really want to know!! ;-)
