The Nudie Semis

The seas have increased overnight and I think they moved the mens semis to the morning to coincide with the high tide.  I am not sure the women would have the strength to tackle the big ones.  Paddling out would take it out of you and then working those big ones would finish you off.  The waves were humungus.  The idea of the contest is that each club has a team of 4 riders and a spare in the event.  There are four clubs contesting in each round.  A round lasts for around 50 minutes or so and each surfer has about 10 minutes in the water and tries to score the most points on a ride.   The points are accumulated from the teams ride and  the club with the highest points, moves into the next round until eventually there are just four clubs competing.

When the surfers change, they have to run into a structure on the beach and the other surfer runs out the other end, sort of baton relay.  The extra is Freshwaters mascot, a Teletubby running down the beach with the new surfer and some other supporters.  I admired that teletubby.   In the first place he could run fast and in the second place it was around 30C or so and he must have been boiling in that suit.

The main blip is a young chap from the Merewether club and for those of you who know surfers, the other extra is Ryan Callinan doing his stuff.
