~Kitt Peak National Observatory~

~Loligam Peak~

This is the second most sacred mountain in the O'odham Indian Nation, at an elevation of almost 7,000 feet. The most sacred mountain being Baboquivari Peak which is the home of Creator I'itoi and the center of their cosmology. Near the top of Loligam (Kitt Peak) is I'itoi's Garden of the Sacred and the summer home of their Creator diety. The name Loligam means "red stick" in the O'odham language, it is a reference to the abundance of Manzanita brush that covers the mountain.

The telescopes mounted on the top of the Quinlan Mountains are some 60 mile southeast of my location on Sunset Ridge. With 24 optical and two radio telescopes, it is the largest, most diverse gathering of astronomical instruments in the world.

This photograph was taken after sunset, which really helps the various mountain ridges, between me and the peak, stand out in the evening haze. Check out the bigger view link below and enjoy!

Thanks for visiting, TucsonJim ;o)
