In the blink of an eye!

Two members of the Derbyshire Dales Ramblers approaching the Dovedale stepping stones, about ten minutes before one of the oldest walkers slipped clean off them about two-thirds of the way across.

He ended up almost submerged briefly before he managed to crawl back onto the stones and then continued to crawl on all fours for the remainder of the crossing.  It was quite a shock for him, and for us all watching, although he managed to escape a complete soaking because he was wearing over-trousers.  But with his age and the fact that we still had a good five miles to go, we walked to the NT property at Ilam Hall and he was persuaded to take up a Ranger's kind offer of a lift back to his car.

He could have avoided the stepping stones and gone along to the bridge... which I suspect is what he'll do in future.

The extra was taken further along the Dove.

10.6 miles
1263 feet ascent
