Goodbye Pythagoras

Backblipped on 24th October 2012

We were planning a quiet day today.

However, it didn't go to plan. I went upstairs around lunchtime to get some of the boys to play with, and found beautiful Pythagoras was very unwell. He was coughing up blood from his mouth and clearly in a great deal of distress.

Despite it being a Sunday, it was a call to the out of hours vet straight away. Py was clearly in trouble, and his skin was also very cold - extremely unusual for hairless rats, who are usually like little hot water bottles.

We got Mede out with him, and also Cantor and Hilbert, because we anticipated (correctly) that we probably wouldn't be bringing Py home.

The vet suspected that he'd had an internal tumour which had ruptured, and agreed that there wasn't anything that could be done for him. His estimated age was over 2 years too, which is a good age for a rat.

So, with great sadness we said goodbye to a beautiful little man. The vet anaesthetised him, and then injected his final injection.

We usually take some fur from our pets, to put in with their ashes, when they die. However, Py didn't have any, so we just got one or two of his short curly whiskers.

Farewell gorgeous man, and thank you for everything. You were a beautiful boy. Hope you're enjoying lots of biscuits now. xx
