Ely

We climbed the lantern tower of Ely Cathedral - the views from the top were not great, it was a grey, dismal day. But the wooden medieval structure within was spectacular. Eight huge oak trunks were brought up by water from Bedfordshire in the late 1330’s, and they hang in mid air, braced by other wooden trunks against the outer stone structure. Much modified since, as the original light structure has been strengthened over the centuries.

The victorians added their restorative touches. Wooden panels open to afford great views of the nave, crossing and chancel from above,. Although the mobile phone screen can be distracting (extra).

We left Ely for home. It’s been a great few days. We chose a route which took us past Rutland Water. A pair of Ospreys have returned from Africa, we watched them enjoying a fish supper. They and their nest are on the extra. Although you would not notice :)
