Hunting Island Lighthouse

This morning we drove to Hunting Island, and hiked out to the South beach, which was unbelievable to see! It almost looks apocalyptic--hurricane Irma  hit this area in 2017--the only thing left of the homes that had been built there are scattered bricks, a few electrical wires sticking up out of the sand, an occasional length of partially buried pvc pipe, and lots and lots of massive felled trees--the beach is covered in them. And yet there was such beauty in the shapes & textures of the trees. That,  along with all the scattered shells, oyster beds, washed up jelly fish and barnacles that were there kept us wandering around for quite a long time. ( I've put one  of the trees in my extras.)
From there we went to see the Islands' lighthouse, built in 1873, the grounds surrounding it, and then a walk down to the beach. The center picture of the collage is the spiral staircase inside the lighthouse that takes you up to the top.
We drove back to Beaufort for a late lunch, then went to tour the Verdier House--unfortunately it closed at 4, so we'll try again tomorrow morning before we leave Beaufort. Because the house was closed we decided instead to go tour the arsenal that dates from the Revolutionary war period, and was only a few blocks away....only it ALSO closed at 4. What's wrong with this city? Who closes up at 4:00? They must not realize that we're on a schedule here!!  Haha!
Gorgeous weather--sunny and 76--I'm enjoying it while I can, as my weather app shows snow coming on Sunday back home.........sigh.  :))
