Cross Well

Back blip

A bit of a quick recce mission to Linlithgow on Monday afternoon - but not for a walk this time. Rather it was to run the eye over possible venues for a meal with friends later in the week.

Although there is a fine fountain inside the walls of Linlithgow Palace, the wonderful carved stone structure that I've used for today's blip sits in a prominent place in the town itself, at The Cross right outside the Burgh Hall. And, despite initial appearances, it's actually not a fountain, but a well.

The crown-topped well sits on an octagonal plinth and dates from 1807, although it has been much repaired and renovated since then, including a bit of a face-lift as recently as 2016. In fact that 1807 well was an "accurate replica" (according to the records) of an earlier well built in the late 16th / early 17th century and which had fallen into a state of disrepair..
