The Princess and the Dog

Duty Calls

Dear O'H dear and Lovely Tea Jenny,

I felt so much better when I woke up this morning. I went for a walk with Murphy and then for a run.

Eldest Mini Princess wanted to go to buy a plant for the garden so we went in a trip to Dobbies where everyone over the age of 70 hangs out and nods knowingly at the plants.

We decided to go all ‘good life’ and buy some herbs to grow in pots and a very helpful man came over and gave us lots of advice on how to look after them (and the plant in our trolley). It was only afterwards that we realised that he didn’t actually work there!

I impressed one of the staff members with my gardening expertise when I asked where I could find ‘those things that go under plant pots to catch the water’. I didn’t know that they were called ‘saucers’!

I think EMP was getting a little nervous. We were looking at lots of plants and I was cheerfully explaining that I had (accidentally) killed most of them at some point in the past. She pretty much considers that I am responsible for horticultural genocide.

She did tell me that her friends are slightly bewildered by her green fingers. She says that she thinks it is her way of rebelling against me!

In the evening, Kitty Cat and I did our duty of going to a 50th birthday party. It was a complete blast from the past seeing lots of people who used to socialise and work in the bar where we all met 20 years ago but had lost touch with. It was a bit painful on the small talk front to start with, but ended up being ok.

I had a moment when I realised that I recognised the girl sitting next to me. She was the person I randomly decided to follow on my lunchtime run and she went round Arthur’s Seat (see Feb 27 entry). I explained that I had stalked her so I am expecting the restraining order soon!

Annoyingly, we had to leave to get the last train home just at the point that the night had become better (but we still weren’t tempted to stay and get a taxi). We went for a night cap when we got back to Edinburgh and mused that the evening felt quite nostalgic but we were both relieved that it was over. Sometimes the past is better left where it is.
