Trees in Seattle

There are 33 species of trees native to Seattle…but today I learned there are at least 1400 species, subspecies, hybrids and such, some of which are good for here, some not,.   A neighborhood tree walk today with Arthur Lee Jacobson imparted more information than I could possibly learn.   Ever.   I’m posting this one because one might not think of these as typical for Seattle…(we did see the cedars, doug firs, alders, pine, maple, cherry, crabapple we’re familiar with)  This  Chinese Windmill Palm is very hardy and there’s that cabbage tree we’ve seen in New Zealand!  The little leaves coming in from both sides of the photo from the parkway are an Ash, can’t remember which.  Walking around my neighborhood (of 30 years!) for 2 hours perfectly timed (right after the all day predicted rain stopped for the day!),  we saw an amazing variety, too many to name, and learned how complex it is to choose a tree for a particular spot,, even 300 ft. of elevation can make a difference.   and water of course…we have very dry summers here and many trees are just too thirsty.   Arthur Lee Jacobson is a very interresting (and rather odd) guy with a wealth of info…check out his website if you are interested…

a few more in extras…more typical .  Lots of green.
