St Lythans

The St Lythans burial chamber is a single stone megalithic domen, built around 4,000 BC as part of a chambered long barrow during the mid Neolithic period. It's on the outskirts of Cardiff, in the hamlet of St Lythans (Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, UK).

As I stood on my patio about 11pm the sky was clear and I made the decision to travel the 30 mins to the burial chamber but was disappointed on arriving that the sky was very cloudy. I watched the 98% (Waning Gibbous) moon ascend the horizon and a good hour later the sky had cleared Northwards and the moon was able to illuminate the entrance to give me the blipfoto.

It's a wonder how they lifted the capstone, which slopes downwards from south east to north west, measures 13 ft long,  and 10 ft wide. It is likely most of the stones except the capstone would have been covered with soil which has eroded.

It was highly enjoyable spending 90 minutes under the stars and next to such an ancient burial chamber to wonder about the persons who lived and died here many thousands of years ago.
