Memorial Day

Dear Diary,

Today is the day we honor not only all those who have given their lives for their country but for all veterans.  I created this image with a photograph of Dad just before he left for WWII in 1944.  He was part of the D-Day invasion of France, not in the initial assault but in one that followed soon after.  He survived the war but with many deep and buried scars...he saw so much horror.  I've added the picture to a letter he wrote home to his sister, my dear Auntie, of some of the things he saw.  "One thing for sure the people back home have no idea what war is."    You are so right Dad.  My brother served in Vietnam and his son is currently a Colonel in the Army.  I am so proud of all their service and sacrifice.

I will bring a bouquet of lilacs and iris to Dotty's grave today.  Today is also a day to remember family and friends who have passed.  Her husband's grave will be adorned with a tiny American flag which is put on all veteran's graves beginning with those that fought in the revolution of 1776. Looking out across the cemetery is always a sobering sight.  While we honor our fallen heroes we must renew our pledge to work towards a world that will no longer require their sacrifice.  In today's chaotic and violent world, that is such a hard thing to imagine but we must try.
