Madrid! D32

Perhaps not the first thing you think about when thinking about Madrid, but it was the first point of interest upon arriving at the city’s train station: the memorial in honor of the 191 victims of the 2004 train bombings.

I’ve never seen anything quite like it: it’s a thing membrane, kept inflated by a room that’s air pressurized, in a space that is otherwise completely bare. The light comes from outside during the day. The material is covered with the messages that were written after the attacks. It’s quite special and solemn.   All the names of the victims are inscribed in the antichambre before the airlock.

The pic was taken right underneath the inflated dome. The extra is from the entrance to the room.

We explored the surroundings of the hotel a bit,  caught a late lunch, then checked in.  I just woke up from a wonderful siesta — in time for another quick walk and then dinner.
