another day with some of my favourite birds

it started on the RSPB cruise to the foot of Bempton cliffs, it didn't look promising with a lot of sea fog around and all previous cruises this year having been cancelled due to weather. The skipper set off with the warning that if the fog worsened he would set back and anyway we couldn't see anything. The good news was the sea was as flat as he had ever seen. As luck would have it the mist lifted for a while whilst we were at the cliffs. The low numbers of puffins was a contrast to a similar trip 3 years ago, I hope the declining numbers are temporary. The majestic gannets with their 6 foot wingspan are however are doing well.
In the afternoon we walked from our lodge up the grass and field lane to Buckon Cliffs where we enjoyed the gannets and a few puffins in total solitude, wonderful.
