Life in Sunny Dubai

Mall Rules

G had a follow-up appointment with her Radiologist this morning so we set out early for that. All looking good there too. She then had to stop off at (previous) employer to hand in her passport for her residence visa to be cancelled.

That done, it was off to Al Ghurair City for her to meet for coffee with someone. I had an hour to kill so armed with my camera, set out to explore this mall which actually has a bit of history! Firstly, it was the first shopping centre ever in Dubai! Opened in 1978, they are the ones who brought the concept of mall shopping to the UAE. As a kid, I used to hang around there rather a lot because 1. school friend lived in flats above, and 2. it had the only shop that sold vinyl records!

As it was showing its age, it has had a complete renovation and actually looks very smart now. Not a single shop where it used to be before, but it was interesting walking up and down the different sections and remembering lots of things.

The sign here is found at the entrance of most malls in Dubai... much of it common sense but you can't take anything for granted these days. The one of public displays of affection is amusing... over here, it is more acceptable for two men (or women) to walk holding hands, than for a man and a woman! Go figure!

PS. Had to take this at an angle to avoid reflection.
