the past is a foreign country

Tynron  Doon, almost 1000ft high and the site of an Iron Age hill fort. In the 16th century an L-shaped tower house stood on its summit. Now the only residents are sheep.

As I sat there, listening to the skylarks high above me, I remembered a less distant past - about 15 years ago, when it seemed almost customary for our family to come here on a Sunday between church and lunch. I would usually walk up Auchengibbert Hill and then sit on top of the Doon to wait for the others, who had walked/run further and faster than me.

Today I'm the only person on the hill.
