Standing Tall

Today was a good productive day and ended with a welcome cup of coffee sitting at the foot of the tallest building in the world!!

This is the famous Burj Khalifa, but for us in the city, it will always be known as the Burj Dubai. It was once just a big.....and I mean BIG..... hole in the ground and on my daily travelling to and from work using the Sheikh Zayed Highway, I watched as the layers were placed one on top of the other, like a gigantic wedding cake in progress!

Kangaroo cranes were used to hop up each layer and seemed to hang precariously off the edge of the structure as it grew in height. The crane operator had his own portable loo and sleeping quarters and would spend a weekly shift perched high up in the cabin to save coming back down to earth at the end of each working day!

The whole structure became much more personal on one particular day in time.

While out with a friend in one of the malls, her 4 wheel drive was bumped from behind and the culprit was the surveyor who was putting all that beautiful curtain walling on the outside of this mammoth structure. As we sat at the police station while he wrote out the accident report we chatted and learned many interesting facts about the amazing construction process. The fender bender became incidental to the conversation!

As well as us at the foot of the Burj, there is a beautiful dancing fountain and GK and I sat with hundreds of other people enjoying the music and the visual feast!

Coffee went down a treat in such ambient surroundings before we once again hit the nightmare of the rush hour traffic and headed for home.

Happy reflections and happy blipping everyone.
