Silly Saturday: Macclesfield Brick Project

We were walking through a pedestrian subway here in Macclesfield this morning when we saw that the tiles on the walls had been painted to look like a library of books. I thought, "How silly!".

But when I looked closely, I found that we really liked it. And we've now researched it - as you can see it's called "The Macclesfield Brick Project".

The Brick Project is a community activity turning overlooked areas into a public archive of thousands of mini-artworks created by local people. The idea for the Brick Project was originally created by community artist-facilitator Dan Petley and local artists for the Macclesfield Town Council. Local residents were encouraged to express how they felt about living or visiting Macclesfield by decorating the Park Lane underpass: they were allowed to design and hand paint one of the bricks in this wall to show how they felt about Macclesfield. It could be things they enjoyed doing in Macclesfield, local wildlife, a picture of a friend or anything that inspired them The only rules were one brick each and stay within the lines, and "Don't paint the mortar!".

It certainly seems to have inhibited the graffiti artists.

There's a bit more about it here and here.

Many thanks as always to  admirer for hosting Silly Saturday.
