UCATT

A nearly all day meeting at the Mechanics Institute. It has a history - the Trades Union Congress was founded here in June 1868, the connection with the unions is celebrated by stained glass windows in various places throughout the building.

The trade unions featured are largely names and acronyms from the past. Like businesses, the unions have had to deal with changing times, which has led to amalgamations and disappearances.

UCATT is one of the more recent disappearances. Representing construction workers it was incorporated into the UNITE behemoth in 2016. I liked the fact that outside, beyond the stained glass window, are cranes, a building being refurbished, and a lot of construction site noise. At times the city centre can feel like one big construction site these days.
