Maen Ceti

Otherwise known as Arthur's Stone, and one of the first sites protected under the Ancient Monuments Act of 1882, this Neolithic burial chamber is located on the Cefn Bryn ridge.

The quartz conglomerate capstone is most likely a glacial erratic, sited as it is on a ridge of Old Red Sandstone. It is thought that rather than hauling the stone from elsewhere the Neolithic people dug below and inserted the support stones to create two chambers.

Now measuring 4x2x2m and weighing 25 tons, the capstone was until the 1690's much larger - a piece weighing 10 tons became detached and lies beside the main stone; theories abound as to the cause!
