Speared

A voracious predator this Empis Opaca fly spears it's prey usually on the head with it's proboscis which is rather dagger like. The resulting meal is offered up to the female who will not mate with males who do not present a gift.

This group of flies, sometimes called Dance flies are found along hedgerows where they find their prey of other insects and are relatively common. Quite scary close up I think seeing it's stance and size.

More head spearing in the Extra

I had lovely day today catching up with an old friend and not usually a lady who lunches found it quite a treat. Found myself going slightly hoarse after a few hours ;))
