A Close Shave
It was a somewhat hectic day. The phone loved ringing. And the E-Mails loved pinging. And the guy who trained me up in my job came for a visit which is always good for a bit of a break and a chat.
He hadn't been to visit for a couple of months so he hadn't seen any of the demolition work going on next door. I said we should go and have a look. The demolition has been progressing and it is quite impressive watching the machine chew its way through concrete.
Our timing was quite good. About 15 seconds after we started watching, something went wrong. Instead of the machine chewing through a floor, it crunched something and 2 joined walls forming a corner fell backwards. I'm guessing they were around 6 meters or 20 feet long.
And they landed right next to one of those portable toilets that they have on building sites. The noise was incredible. I have no idea how heavy those walls were. but they must have weighed a lot. One wall landed almost flat on the floor and the connecting wall was pointing straight up. The whole thing rocked a bit and as it rocked it hit the portable toilet sending it skittering* across the ground for a good 3 meters/10 feet.
Work stopped immediately.
There was no-one in the toilet at that time.
I still wouldn't fancy opening the door after that.
*Somehow appropriate in the circumstances
