End of an era

Mother and daughter, Joyce and Nicola Carberry, share a moment at the end of Dollar Summer School.

For tonight  marked the end of an era- of 59 years of this legendary 10-day summer school in the heart of Scotland.

Nicola  (left) a lecturer in Fine Art in Glasgow taught the Life class in recent years.
Meanwhile her father, John Carberry, ( see extra photo) along with Peter Russell taught here for 40 years, never missing a year.

So its closure was a sad occasion brought about by a combination of factors outwith their control from the rising costs of hiring premises, to changing social habits.

For years I used to attend this summer school and it offered some of the best art experiences I ever had. Lys Hansen’s Life Drawing class was both iconic and legendary. It was tough and challenging and we all learnt a lot.

So a special thank you to all the tutors who taught and inspired us there over the years.

There are plans to try and keep the spirit of it alive but it would not be in Dollar and is likely to be much smaller and in a different format.
